In the lead up to their Pay-it-forward campaign, Nourished for Nil shared a heartwarming story with us that demonstrates the power of community generosity.
Based in the Hawkes Bay, Nourished for Nil helps relieve food insecurity both by diverting food from landfill and through their Social Supermarket. This supermarket has shelves stocked with grocery items to ensure a good variety of nutritious food for locals in need. Each grocery item is allocated a point value rather than a dollar value, so shoppers can spend their point allocation (depending on family size) but shop just like they would in a normal supermarket, but with a much smaller payment at the end.
A frequent Nourished for Nil Social Supermarket shopper, in his 80’s, was excited to be able to save $20. It wasn’t ‘just’ $20 to him, it was a step towards getting new tyres for his car. He was so thankful and grateful that the Social Supermarket Manager, Lisa, was prompted to pop next door to the tyre store, to offer to replace his tyres herself.
In a lovely display of community kindness, the tyre shop sorted out his little car for nothing. It really does show the flow on effect of small moments of generosity.

If you want to be part of stories like these, you can pay-it-forward at the checkout when shopping at New World Onekawa and New World Hastings between the 16th–29th September. All donations will be combined and used to provide groceries to the Nourished for Nil Social Supermarket.
Here’s how generous people just like you have made a difference to local people in need.
