VIew Profile

The BBM Tokoroa Social Supermarket was established two years ago and has already had a widespread impact on locals in need.

This style of relieving food insecurity focuses on dignity in choice, allowing people to select what they need, rather than being provided with pre-filled food parcels. BBM has adopted a low cost points system, where each grocery item has a points value, and each person is allocated a number of points they can spend, depending on their whanau size.

To shop, whanau are asked to provide a small koha (donation), or whatever they can afford.

For one shopper the Social Supermarket saved them from having to make a choice that no-one should have to make - between health and food.

Tēna koutou katoa. A big mihi to all of the mahi that has gone into the Social Supermarket here in BBM Tokoroa. This week my tāne and I had to choose between keeping the heater on for his renal failure situation or having kai on our table. Thank you for making both possible. We are humbled and grateful. Ngā mihi nui

Feedback like this is a testament to the work the Social Supermarket team are doing, as well as to all the big hearted volunteers and donors who keep it stocked and running.

If you want to be part of stories like these, you can pay-it-forward at the checkout when shopping at New World Matamata and New World Tokoroa between the 16th–29th September. All donations will be combined and used to provide groceries to the BBM Tokoroa Social Supermarket.
