When we say ‘beauty treatment’, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Is it the feeling of being pampered and being treated like a Queen (or King), or maybe it’s the little nap you often find yourself having in the middle of a facial? For one of the women at Tauranga Women’s Refuge, her first thought was her worth.
Worth is defined as ‘the level at which someone or something deserves to be valued or rated’. It’s not what we’d usually associate with beauty treatments. But when you’ve been made to feel small and worthless as a result of family violence, believing in your worth can become part of a daily struggle.
One in three New Zealand women experience physical or sexual abuse from a partner in their lifetime. Tauranga Women’s Refuge exists to provide a safe place where these women and their children can escape, as well as receive support and advocacy.
Through a partnership with SELF_ and GoGenerosity, they have also been able to provide experiences that help build the women’s confidence and self worth back up. Learning how it feels to be treated with care and respect is an important part of the healing journey.
Thanks to the generosity of their clients and their corporate partner First Mortgage Trust, SELF_ recently paid-forward a luxury 60 minute facial (valued at $150) to one of these women.
She said “I never thought I was worthy to receive such a treatment. Thank you so much”
SELF_ believe self care and self love (and the resulting glowing skin), are keys to building self confidence. Based on the recipient's response to her facial, we’d agree!
If you want a moment of pampering yourself, as well as to help more women feel special and worthy, head to SELF_ at The Mount for one of their signature treatments and ask to pay-it-forward while you’re there. Any amount makes a difference.
