Manaaki Kai - Vision West Waka Wakakitenga’s Social Supermarket - is a pillar of their community. Built on the values of Vision West, the supermarket is another avenue to help vulnerable whānau to rise out of poverty, through wraparound services.

Operating on a points system, Manaaki Kai Social Supermarket allows shoppers to choose the groceries they need for less, providing food support in times of financial hardship.

One shopper described the impact this service has had on them and their whānau, during a season of financial strain and stress:

I walked away almost in tears yesterday just to be able to get a decent amount of groceries and fill the pantry a bit and get items like washing powder, fabric softener for example that always chews up so much of the bill when they are needed. Aside from that just got the responsible things like flour, rice, pasta, milk, breakfast cereals just things that are always needed and create multiple meals but snuck in some Whittaker's chocolate and lollies for the kids too

Being able to treat the kids is one of those things we take for granted when we can do it, but provides such an emotional boost when life is hard.

If you want to be part of stories like these, you can pay-it-forward at the checkout when shopping at New World New Lynn and Pakn’Save Alderman Drive Henderson between the 16th–29th September. All donations will be combined and used to provide groceries to the BBM Tokoroa Social Supermarket.
